Ripplestream pricked her ears. From what the two she-cats were saying, they thought she was gone. Well, then, she thought, I guess I'll give them a surprise once they get down.

Hazeltear glanced casually down. She stared hard and long, and couldn't see anything - and then she saw it. A familiar blue-grey tail. Ripplestream, she thought. "Yeah, I bet she's not here!" she mewed loudly, and gestured below her with her tail.

Wolfriver blinked, then realized what Hazeltear meant. She said nothing for a moment, but changed her speed so she was descending beside Hazeltear. "I know how one of us can still slide down," she murmured. "Y'see those loose rocks?" Wolfriver swept her tail casually toward one of many small piles of pebbles and loose dirt. "Your paw would slide if you stepped on them," she meowed quietly, grinning. "You could do it on purpose. Just wait until we get past the steepest part right of the climb. We're almost a fourth of the way down." Wolfriver laughed. "And don't act too happy when you start to slide."

Ripplestream was itching to go back to camp now. But she wanted to see the warriors' reaction whn they found out she was there.

Hazeltear grinned at her Clanmate and walked slowly but purposefully to one of the small piles. "Mouse dung!" she mewed loudly as she stepped on one, and began to slide. She concentrated hard on not smiling, but it was hard - sliding was so much fun! As her loose pile of rocks began to slow down, she neatly jumped off - right beside Ripplestream. 'Hi, Ripplestream!" she mewed, and grinned.

"Hello, Hazeltear," Ripplestream nodded to Wolfriver as well. "Look, you two," she firmly meowed, "I knew you weren't telling the whole truth about your 'adventure'," sensing the worry in the two warriors, she added and sighed, "I won't tell Seamist or any cat."

Wolfriver pushed off from the rock immediately and bounded down the slope after her friend. "Hazeltear!" she called, her voice concerned. "Are you oka-oh. Hi Ripplestream," she meowed. "Adventure? What are you talking about?" Wolfriver planted a bemused expression on her face. "Um...okay. Thanks, I guess."

Ripplestream sighed, "You two should get back to camp before you're missed. I'll cover for you." She waved her tail in farewell to Wolfriver and Hazeltear, and went to collect the herbs she had gathered before.

Hazeltear let out a sigh of relief as soon as Ripplestream had left. "That was close," she mewed, and added, "It's a good thing she's not like Seamist." She knew how strict her mother could be - she spouted rules, rules and more rules every day. 'Don't do this, don't do that,' she would say. She's gotten a whole lot more bossy since she became deputy, she thought.

Ripplestream picked up her herbs and padded back to Wolfriver and Hazeltear. "I'm not trying to boss you around, but you guys should really go back to camp," the medicine cat meowed, "Seamist is really going to have a go at you if she finds out." She glanced at Hazeltear and murmured, "Sorry."

hazeltear looked defiantly at Ripplestream. "Not if we tell her we've been looking for foxes,' she pointed out. Her eyes dared Ripplestream to disagree. She knew she should show more respect for the medicine cat, but her streak of pride wouldn't let her back down so easily.

Suddenly, Ripplestream's patience ran out, "You two are coming back with me - now," she snapped.

Wolfriver shifted her paws uncomfortably. They couldn't know for sure who Seamist would believe if they told her different stories - two warriors who were young and less than well behaved or one medicine cat who was not much older than them, but Wolfriver could guess. It would better for them to start playing it safe. I don't want to get stuck caring for the elders again, and I doubt Hazeltear does either. Let's end this before it turns ugly.
Wolfriver pricked her ears up as if she heard a noise in the distance and turned to look toward Shoreclan territory. "Hey, I think I can hear Swallowsong calling for us. Didn't we tell her we'd be searching over here?" She shook her head, purring in amusement. "We'd better go find her before she starts looking somewhere else."

Ripplestream pricked her ears, but she couldn't hear anything. "Nope, I can't hear anything," she meowed. "I can't even scent her!"

Wolfriver snorted. "I thought you said you were young. You must be losing your hearing, though, 'cause I hear her voice." Wolfriver wheeled around and padded quickly through the edge of the forest and into the trees. "Swallowsong!" she called. "Over here! We're coming!"
