Mouseshadow was stalking toward a fat vole. When she was close enough she bunched her muscles, ready to pounce. Suddenly a twig cracked behind her and the vole, sensing danger vanished in a bush. Hissing furiously, she turned to see who disturbed the vole.

Lightstream padded calmly out of the screen of ferns which was hiding her from sight of Mouseshadow. She sensed the anger in the other she-cat's glare, and, even though she didn't know what was wrong, she said politely, "oh, hi, Mouseshadow. Sorry if I just disturbed you."

"Do you want to hunt together?" Lightstream meowed, her sharp eyes searching the thick undergrowth, and scenting the air carefuly.

"Sure." said Mouseshadow answered, glad to have a companion. "I didn't catch anything yet. All the prey is hiding in their holes. That vole was the first one I saw."

"Oh," Lightstream murmured apologetically, "and I scared it away, didn't I?" Without waiting for an answer, she padded into the bushes.

Mouseshadow followed her deputy quietly, listening for the smallest sounds of prey. After a while, she heard something moving in the undergrowth. It was a mouse, eating a small seed. At once, Mouseshadow crouched down and began to creep toward the mouse.

Lightstream froze as she saw Mouseshadow began creeping toward the prey. She stayed unmoving, frozen to the spot, afraid that any sound she made would scare the mouse away.

"Nice catch!" Lightstream congratulated Mouseshadow. Then her face darkened. "I'm not sure if we will have prey shortage after we move to Korkea Maa."

"I know." Mouseshadow answered seriously while she scraped dirt over her catch "Still, we should hunt while we can." she added and smelled the air to see whether there was any prey there.

Lightstream began taking hungry big bites, then realized that she had eaten almost half of the fresh-kill. Embarrassed, she licked her shoulder to smooth a lock of fur which was sticking out, and muttered, "I'm full now."

Mouseshadow crouched down beside the fresh-kill. She devoured it in a few huge bites. It tasted delicious. She cleaned her whiskers hurriedly, then stood up. "OK, I'm ready now," she meowed to Lightstream.
