Mouseshadow bunched her muscles. The dogs were nearer now, probably they already caught their scent. When one of the dogs was underneath her she jumped. This, she thought, was just like catching prey, and as she was so good at that, she found she had more courage to do this. Landing squarely on the dog's back in a flurry of teeth and claws. The element of surprise is very important in an attack, she had learned that when she was an apprentice. She raked her claws along its shoulders, making deep wounds. The dog yelped in surprise and fury, and in a moment the other dogs noticed too.

Lightstream jumped down from the tree as the other dog came underneath her. She judged her jump just right to claw deeply at the dog's side before she landed on all four paws on the ground. Immediately, she sprang up onto the back of the dog, took hold of its long floppy ears, and began raking her long claws furiously at any part of her opponent she could get to.

The dog shook Mouseshadow down, but she clawed at its face. When she drew back, she saw that one of the dogs eyes was gone. Deciding that this dog was much less dangerous than the others, Mouseshadow ran to help Lightstream, but the third dog, barking madly, leapt on her and with its huge claws, tore up the skin on Mouseshadow's flank. Gasping for breath, she turned and clawed at the dog's front legs.

The dog tried to roll over on its back, but Lightstream jumped down just in time to graspe the dog's front leg in her jaws. She bit down hard, and the dog swung its leg high into the air. She lost her grip onto the dog, and flew through the air to land in some bushes. She stood up quickly, feeling dizzy and weak. But she dashed back into the battle to help Mouseshadow to fight against the third dog.

Mouseshadow pulled away from the dog, bleeding heavily. She stood up and promised herself to hurt the dog enough to leave her Clan's territory forever. Side by side with Lightstream she fought the dog with all her strength, biting and clawing without mercy.

Lightstream whipped around just in time to face the second dog, charging towards them. She reared up on her hind legs to claw at its face. The dog yelped in surprise and pain, and turned around to flee into the bushes. Lightstream growled in satisfaction as she went back to fighting the third dog.

With a huge leap, Mouseshadow jumped on the dog's head and bit down on its nose while sinking her claws deep into its muzzle. The dog barked and growled furiously, but was too scared to continue fighting, and fled after the second dog. Mouseshadow turned and saw that the dog whose eye she had clawed out earlier was racing after the other two. She fell down onto the ground, gasping and coughing. She had lost a lot of blood. She turned around painfully and began to lick her wound. "They won't bother us anymore..." she whispered in a weak voice, barely audibly.

Exhausted, Lightstream limped to where Mouseshadow was laying. She collasped next to her, panting. She noticed for the first time that her back was aching from the fall onto the ground. She received a few wounds, but none of them was serious. "First badgers... Then dogs." she growled, and turned over to see to her friend. "Are you okay, Mouseshadow?" she asked worriedly.

Mouseshadow was almost too weak to speak. The wound was very deep. "Have to... go... to... Feather... moon..." she rasped. She tried to stand up, but fell back into the pool of blood she had been lying in.

Lightstream sensed the urgency in her friend's voice. She knew clearly that this was life-and-death for Mouseshadow. She stood up, and was torn between the choices of staying and caring for Mouseshadow, and run to get Feathermoon. She could lick up the wounds for Mouseshadow, and probably find some cobwebs to stop the bleeding for a while; but if she go and find Feathermoon, it might take some time, and what if Mouseshadow-- She could bear to think of it. Then she made the decision in a moment. She will stay and help Mouseshadow, and do her best. She lay down beside Mouseshadow and began licking her wounds. She was pretty sure that Mouseshadow was in danger only because of the great loss of blood.

Mouseshadow tried feebly to help Lightstream lick her wounds. After it was much cleaner, Mouseshadow murmured defiantly, "We can go. I can walk you know, its only my side that's hurt, but I do need Feathermoon." She stood up, blood still pouring from her side, but next moment fell sideways into Lightstream, trying desperately not to fall down again. She had to stay upright, she had to live...

"No, Mouseshadow, don't be silly!" Lightstream said sternly, surprising herself with the voice she adopted, "you won't be able to make it back to camp!" She gently laid Mouseshadow down on the ground again, and dashed off to find cobwebs. Only a few moments later she came back with a mouthful of them, and pressed them onto Mouseshadow's blood-soaked side.

"Thanks, that's a lot better," said Mouseshadow gratefully, her voice still weak. "I'll still need Feathertail though. Could you get her. I can survive for a few minutes alone, I'm not weak!"

"Okay..." Lightstream said uncertainly, but she took off as fast as she could go back to the camp.
