By the time Cloudstorm reached the cave, 'Dark Cave', that Wildshadow told him about the sky was darkening. The light drizzle that had started when he was in Fire Meadow was now quickly turning into a proper rain. Cloudstorm slipped inside the dark cave with relief, and shook his pelt to make it drier. He looked around. The Dark Cave was a depressing place with its black, moist walls and slippery and bare ground. However, it was an ideal place for shelter, and that was Cloudstorm's priority right now. He yawned widely and sat down. After a moment he decided that it was not comfortable enough for even one night, so he unwillingly padded outside. The rain was falling more heavily now. A few minutes later Cloudstorm gratefully came in, holding a bundle of wet but soft moss in his mouth and shaking drops of water from his dark gray fur. He placed the moss in the most sheltered corner where it was warmest and sniffed the air carefully. He could scent cats but the smell was very faint. No cat has been here for moons. Good. He went to the mouth of the cave and put scent markers there. Later he would enlarge his territory but it was good enough for now. He returned to his nest, satisfied. Cloudstorm settled down comfortably on the wet moss and began to wash one large paw. When he was finished he looked around his new home one more time, then curled and was instantly asleep, dreaming of the next day when he would explore the forest.

Runningfire had been caught unprepared outside in the rain when the rain first started. She had quickly slipped into the Dark Cave because it was the nearest shelter to where she had been hunting. She ran into the cave, misplaced her paws on a slippery rock near the entrance, slipped, and fell. Growling in anger, she meowed outloud, "I hate this cave!" It was then she realized there was another cat in the cave. She peered into the darkness of the cave.

Cloudstorm jerked awake suddenly as a cat called loudly, "I hate this cave!" He was on his paws at once, the cave already felt like his home and he was prepared to defend it. He glanced cautiously toward the unknown cat, but could only see a silhouette because there was more light outside. "Who's there?" he asked sharply, "Didn't you smell the scent markers. This is my home now!" he waited for a second then added more calmly, "Who are you? Wildshadow?

"How did you know my brother's name?" Runningfire growled suspiciously. But she stood her ground, for she knew she had a good excuse for being in this cave. "I came here yesterday to hunt, and this wasn't your territory. Who are you, anyway?"

"I met your brother earlier, but never mind that now," Cloudstorm said roughly. "If you're not him, then who are you? And yeah, yesterday this wasn't my territory, but now it is. It's just the cave now, but tomorrow it'll be bigger. Anyway, have you been hunting all yesterday and today? You didn't even rest. Well, tell you're brother and any other loners you know... Oh, by the way, do you know Darkheart, that mousebrai..." he stopped in case he insulted this cat, then shrugged and went on, "Tell them that the Dark Cave is my home now and they can come here only if I allow it."
