Just before dawn, Cloudstorm arrived at the place he knew he had to go. Fire Meadow. He made sure he was quite alone. He sat down, needing to think. It wasn't that he didn't like it here, he thought. He knew several cats. Even Darkheart, he didn't hate. He had been planning to attack the clan cats, but that wasn't so important anymore. It was more like he didn't belong here. He had to go on. To where, he did not know.
Quite suddenly, as though following orders, Cloudstorm stood up. Now that he had made his decision he didn't think he could bear staying here a moment longer. He padded swiftly towards the edge of the forest as the gray of the sky began to turn pale pink and then, slowly, gold. At every step, his heart and mind pulled him back to the forest, to dark cave. He pushed on.
After several minutes of padding quietly, he caught the scent of a rabbit. His belly growled with hunger. No, Cloudstorm told himself. This is not your forest anymore. That rabbit is not yours either. It was strange how he knew that he coudn't hunt in this forest, not now, not ever. Last night he had had a strange dream. He was alone in the forest as usual, but something was wrong. The trees growled at him, the wind whispered threats in his ears. And when Cloudstorm had woken up, he knew with a dreadful certainty that he had to leave this forest forever.
Cloudstorm glimpsed the edge of the forest. The sky was light. Dawn had arrived. Breaking into a run, he left the forest he knew so well, ran into the twoleg city. Without looking back once, Cloudstrom turned a corner and was gone.
