Darkheart shifted closer to Wildshadow as soon as Cloudstorm loped off towards the river. His face wore a look of satisfaction and his eyes held a crafty gleam. "There's something I don't trust about him," he murmured to Wildshadow.

Wildshadow stared after Cloudstorm. "I don't see why we couldn't trust him," he muttered. Turning his head so he could meet Darkheart's eyes, he asked, "why did you send him across the river to ShoreClan territory? What if a patrol catches him?"

Cloudstorm was walking slowly. He longed to reach the river and sleep. Maybe I can have my territory near the river, he thought wearily. Maybe... his thoughts trailed away. He was dizzy from hunger and exhaustion. The fresh-kill Darkheart gave him seemed moons away.

Wildshadow sat in silence with Darkheart for a while, then spoke aloud his thoughts. "Are we helping him? Or are we tricking him into a trap?"

Darkheart shook his head. "I don't really know," he admitted. "I know he probably isn't evil or anything like that, but I still don't trust him completely." He told Wildshadow. "What do you think?" he asked.

Wildshadow shrugged, suddenly unable to decide whether to help Cloudstorm or to ignore the fact that they might be leading him to danger. Why do you care about a stranger who you've just met a minute ago? he silently scolded himself.

Cloudstorm stopped. He guessed that the river was quite near, but he wanted to hunt. He didn't think he could go on anyway. He scented the air carefully, and caught the smell of a rabbit. A few moments later, the skinny rabbit was clamped in his jaws. When he finished, Cloudstorm stood up and streched, still weary, but at least not hungry, and continued on his way.

Darkheart suddenly looked in the direction that Cloudstorm had disappeared to. "Do you think we should call him back?" he asked his friend. "If not," he continued, "You can come back with me to me and Runningfire's cave and you can visit her," he suggested, wondering if Wildshadow would like to see his sister.

"No, I don't think Runningfire wants to see me, after she had stormed away yesterday in anger, when I was trying to persuade her to stop the conflict between... you know." Wildshadow muttered, "and I do think we should call Cloudstorm back, at least."

Darkheart narrowed his eyes in frustration for a moment when Wildshadow mentioned Cedar off-handedly. Then he nodded, "Fine, fine," he muttered reluctantly, "You can call him back."

Cloudstorm was very near the river now. He could smell it and was looking forward to a nice long sleep.

Darkheart looked in the direction of the river and took a deep breath. "Cloudstorm!" he yowled loudly, his voice tinged with irritation. "It's Darkheart and Wildshadow!"

"Come back here!" Wildshadow yelled as loudly as he could, which wasn't so loud. He wasn't used to yelling and shouting, unlike those stupid Clan cats.

Cloudstorm heard Darkheart yelling for him. Was this a trap? He didn't think he had enough strength to go back and fight. "What?" he shouted, and he was glad that his voice at least, was still as loud as usual.

Come back here!" Wildshadow yelled again, feeling his throat beginning to dry and croak. All these yelling and shouting is doing me no good, he thought darkly.
