Skysong led the way to the Preyrocks, Srompaw was close behind her. She didn't talk much because she was really nervous. When Blazestar had chosen her to be Stormpaw's menter, at first Skysong was thrilled. But she was just a very new warrior herself, and that night she had convinced herself that she was too young. She kept reminding herself that Blazestar thought that she was the best one for the job, but that didn't help much. She was way to worried that Blazestar had been wrong. She lauged to herself when she realized that she didn't know if she or Stormpaw was more nervous. This was going to be a very strange training session.

Stormpaw's heart was pounding. My first training session! This is so great! But the enthusiasm that bubbled through her was slowly being frozen by fear. What if I mess up?! Will Skysong still want me? She hurried to keep up with her mentor. Stormpaw was fast, but she wasn't as strong as the other apprentices. Well, I guess that's why we have training! She whisked her tail nervously.

Skysong and Stompaw soon reached the Preyrocks. Skysong looked around nervously, and, seeing no one, turned to face Stompaw. "Have you ever cought freash-kill before?" she asked. Of corse she hadn't, she had become an apprentice a few days ago. Real smart question. Before Stormpaw could answer, she spoke again, "Let me rephrase. How much do you know about hunting." That was better. Sort of. Still not the best way to start out, but she had absolutly no idea what she was supposed to say. All the while she had been monitering the soulds of the forest, listening for any sign of pret. Her ear twitched and she heard the thumping of a rabbit, but she quicly dissmised the sound. Stormpaw wouldn't be ready for rabbits yet. Mice were the best to start with.

Stormpaw blinked "Well.. I know that you have to be quiet and patient to stalk prey. They can sense you as well as you sense them, so you have to convince them that you're not dangerous." She looked at her mentor hopefully, wondering if she had gotten it right. She was trying to be calm and respectful, but her eagerness soon got the better of her restraint. "Can I try hunting now? Pleeeeease?" Without waiting for an answer she whirled, having seen a flash of motion out of the corner of her eye. She snatched at it with sharp claws and pinned it to the ground. The impulsive apprentice let out a meow of embarasment when she realized that it was... a leaf.

Skysong nodded slowly," Well, that's almost right. You have to convince the prey that you're not acctually there. Their not that bright, you see, and rely mostly on instinct. By being really quiet and patient you can convince them that your not there wan that what they are hearing is something else" Before she could go ineto furter explination of how to do just that, Stormpaw burst out a question. "Almost, you need to be..." She never got to finish her answer, because at that moment, Stormpaw leaped in the air, snatching in her claws a small leaf. "Good. At least you can catch a leaf." She muttered to herself. "But leaves don't acctually help the Clan in any way." She told Stormpaw, joking for the most part, only a little exasperated that Strompaw hadn't even let her finish speaking. "That's what I was just about to say, you need to be patient."

Stormpaw let go of the leaf, pelt hot with embarasment. I'm such a mousebrain. She didn't dare meet her mentor's eyes, worried that Skysong would be angry. Her tail drooped when the warrior reminded her that leaves didn't help the Clan."I'll try to be more patient," she meowed earnestly. "But sometimes the world is so slow." She twitched her tail, eyes gleaming. But that's kind of good. If the prey was fast, I'd go hungry.

Skysong nodded. "So, what your need to learn first is how to sneak up on prey. Since the easiest thing to catch are mice, that's were we'll start. For a mouse, you have to remeber that they're really small, so they will be able to fell your pawsteps before they see you. The smaller the mouse, the bigger the pawsteps will seam to them and the harder it will be for you to sneak up. So, let's see you try to creep up on that imaginary mouse over there." Skysong instructed. Privatly, she was releaved. This was turning out to be easier then she expected. And Stompaw already practacly worshiped her. This would be easy.

Stormpaw nodded, intent on her mentor's words. She looked around, and decided that the small pebble lying near where Skysong had indicated would be the mouse. The grey apprentice began to creep up on it, heart pounding with excitement. Who cares if it's a rock? I'm actually stalking something! Dry leaves crackled under her paws and she winced, her mentor's words running through her mind. Step lightly! She took a deep breath, imagining that she was floating. Stormpaw moved across the stretch lightly and quickly, like she had bound clouds to her paws. She stopped a few paces from the pebble and crouched, tail flicking back and forth. Should she pounce on it? Skysong hadn't said anything about pouncing. But she hadn't said anything about not pouncing, either! Stormpaw hurled herself through the air, slamming her paws down on the pebble. "Yes!"
