Firefly was stalking a vole. He crouched low, than jumped, and got the vole just in time. He dug a hole, buried it then looked up. He was surprised to see that he was barely on the edge of the forest. After a moments thinking he ventured out into the open grassy meadow that separated the two-leg nests and the forest. Firefly looked around warily and smelled the air. He scented a cat, but looking around, he saw no one.

Houses? Shadowpaw thought furiously. No, that's not right. I must have taken a wrong turn somewhere. Cursing himself for being such a fool, he walked in a small circle and headed back towards the forest. A flicker of movement caught his eye. He looked sideways sharply, and, sure enough, there was another cat there. With white fur. His heart nearly stopped beating. What? How did Crystalpool find me so quickly? He dug his claws into the grass. Every instinct was telling him to run away, but he so wanted to talk to his mentor again, even if she was only going to shred his ears off afterwards. Rational thought returned, and he realized that the cat's fur was longer than Crystalpool's, and had streaks of grey through it as well. Furthermore, it carried no Clan-scent that he could detect. A loner, perhaps, or a rogue. He made a face as another though crossed his mind, but could see the sense in it. I don't like it, though. Sighing, he slunk nervously towards the rogue.

Firefly's head snapped up as he heard the cat approach. He quickly lowered it, pretending he hadn't seen anyone. He dug up the vole, deciding that it wasn't safe there than lay down and started eating it, glancing casually at the young cat watching him a couple fox-lengths away. He was showing the cat that he was perfectly relaxed. After a moment he called toward him: "Hey, you! What are you doing on my territory?" he smiled to himself. Of course he hadn't marked a territory for himself yet, but he wanted to test how brave the apprentice was without his Clan. He stood up, his fur standing on end, and baring his teeth, wondering how the cat was going to react.

Padding through the forest in StormClan's territory, the deputy followed her prey-scent closely, stalking a squirrel with precision. The shimmering heat had made it difficult to bring back much fresh-kill for the Clan, for combined reasons. But that day it had been cooler by a few degrees, so Songheart took the risk of a heatstroke to bring back some prey for her Clanmates. All things considered, her fur was a lot shorter than many cats'. And she was a deputy, with responsibilities, right?
Sometimes I think I try too hard, she thought grumpily to herself. Following the scent trail intently, she almost didn't notice when Shadowpaw's scent crossed the squirrel's. But she did, and she stopped, looking around to see if he was there. Seeing that he wasn't, she shrugged, assuming it was medicine cat business. But his scent continued the same way the squirrel's did - straight towards the twolegs' territory.
Discarding her squirrel hunt, Songheart made her way to where the trees parted and gave way to a clearing. On across the clearing were the houses and neighborhoods of the twolegs. Songheart looked out intently with bright green eyes, looking around for Shadowpaw, and caught sight of him talking to someone she didn't recognize. Narrowing her eyes, she realized she was upwind, and so in addition to not being able to tell who the other cat was by scent, they could probably smell her. She waited, standing perfectly still, her fur bristling slightly.

Shadowpaw flattened his ears and came to a halt about halfway across the meadow. This was not a good idea! He looked at the rogue's bristling fur and bared teeth, and felt slightly sick. You're ridiculous! Another voice piped up in his mind. Look at you, acting like a kitten afraid of a thunderstorm! You're a Clan cat, aren't you, even if you're not a warrior? Taking a deep breath to steady his nerves, the small tabby fluffed up his fur and faced Firefly defiantly. "Clan cats can go wherever they like!" He followed these words with a ferocious hiss, but couldn't banish the nagging idea that he looked a little ridiculous.

Firefly sneered at the cat talking back to him. "A Clan cat! Wow, I'm scared!" he meowed sarcasrically. "You realize being in a Clan only weakens you, right? You Clan cats couldn't last a moon on your own and..." Firefly stopped suddenly and smelled the air. He looked downwind and saw another cat standing stock still. Furthermore, she had the same scent as Shadowpaw. He was outnumbered. Luckily the young cat didn't notice Songheart. Not yet. But if he wanted it to stay that way, Firefly had to think fast. He advanced toward Shadowpaw menacingly. "As I was saying, you'd better get out of my territory or else. You'd better leave quick, too. I don't want to get your stinking blood on my pelt, I just washed it, you see." He licked his paw and drew it over his ear for the effect.

The small tabby dug his claws into the grass in helpless rage as the rogue mocked him. If I was a warrior, I'd teach him to respect the Clans! But he wasn't. The rogue stopped suddenly, and flicked a glance downwind. Shadowpaw didn't dare take his eyes off the other cat to see if there was anything there or not. His tail lashed back and forth furiously. Why was I stupid enough to get myself into this mess? And then the mangy rogue was meowing at him again, telling him to get off his territory or else. It was all so futile. Why do all the warriors and rogues think that fighting will solve everything? Shadowpaw thought tiredly. Unfortunately, in this case it will- he'll squash me like a flea. "Really?" somecat said in his voice. "You just washed it? In what, a mud hole?" Did I just say that? Shadowpaw thought dazedly. Oops.

Firefly growled at the small tabby. How dare he talk to him like that? "No, but I will wash your pelt in mud if you stay a second longer!" he hissed coldly. It was taking all his willpower not to attack the young cat. He usually loved a good fight, but he knew that if he attacked now the other cat would undoubtedly help the tabby and though Firefly felt sure he could easily beat either of them in a battle if they were alone he wasn't so confident in taking on both of them at once. So instead of attacking Shadowpaw he settled on moving forward so that he was almost nose to nose with Shadowpaw, and growling.

This was too ridiculous. Shadowpaw laughed nervously, backing up a step as the rogue paced forwards. This cat could tear him to shreds, and yet the two of them were exchanging insults like apprentices from rival Clans. Suddenly the rogue was almost nose-to-nose with him. Shadowpaw scurried backwards in a rush, nearly tripping over his own paws. He steadied himself immediately, whisking his tail. Stumbling around and looking helpless would be foolish, but he didn't want Firefly to get too close, either. "Nah, I don't think I'll leave," he meowed, striving for nonchalance and not quite succeeding. "It's pretty nice here."

Firefly lashed his tail in rage and stared in hatred at the cat. His fury was beyond words. How dare this little furball talk back to him like that?! A rushing filled his ears. Firefly had always had a bad temper for other cats. He heard the cat laughing and his claws dug into the ground. "You'd better get out of here now, or you'll never see your Clanmates ever again," he screeched and leapt at Shadowpaw with claws unsheathed and teeth showing.

Shadowpaw yelped and threw himself out of the way, landing in the emerald grass with a hard thud. His heart was racing now, reminding him uncomfortably of the rapid heartbeat of a mouse the instant before it feels the jaws of the hunter. He pushed himself up out of the grass with bruised paws, groaning in pain. His sideways lunge had been faster than he had intended, and he was feeling the aftereffects now. His amber eyes darted back and forth nervously as he looked for the rogue.

The young cat threw himself out of the way just in time. Firefly grunted in irritation and got ready for his next attack. He crouched low in the tall grass, bunching his muscles. This time he wanted to make sure that he caused enough wounds that the cat would be fleeing back to his Clan howling in pain. Firefly smiled at the thought and narrowed his eyes as he focused on his target. A little too far, but he had strong legs. Firefly's claws were making deep scratches in the soft ground. He was getting impatient. Finally, not being able to control himself he lunged expecting to land right on top of the apprentice.

Shadowpaw screamed as Firefly's weight pinned him to the ground. He thrashed back and forth, short claws digging gouges in the grass as he tried to free himself. Fear pulsed through his mind, obliterating any bright ideas he might have had for getting out of this mess. Well, it's what you wanted, wasn't it? A voice in the back of his mind enquired sweetly. Didn't you want to die? "No!" he screamed, but whether it was an answer to that sinister question or merely an overwrought reaction to his desperate predicament he could not be sure. He twisted his head as he noticed another cat standing at the edge of the woods. For a second he thought it was another rogue, but then he realized that the cat looked familiar... "Songheart!" he yowled, no longer caring how pathetic he looked. "Help me!"
