A sleek, silver dappled feline padded calmly over to the Marsh, where herbs grew strongly. It was barely dawn, and Crystalpool, the Medicine Cat of StormClan, blinked sapphire blue eyes as the early dawn seemingly brightened the light. The streaked purple pink sky dappled Crystalpool's pelt, turning it a dark grey. Coolly, Crystalpool settled comfortably and sniffed the air.
Hurry up, Shadowpaw!
Crystalpool was going to test Shadowpaw's knowledge and teach him more after she found out his strengths. And weaknesses. Hopefully he wouldn't wince at the sight of blood and wounds, Shadowpaw had to have all the attributes of a Medicine Cat. Crystalpool's eyes darkened momentarily.
I hope I made the right choice as my Apprentice. After all, he will be my successor.
Crystalpool blinked, and she stared up at the lightening sky.

A thin tabby tom padded through the marsh, his tail flicking back and forth. The sky was just beginning to grow pale with dawn light, and the normally composed apprentice had to struggle to suppress a yawn. Why did we have to get up this early? The herbs aren't going to run away. Carefully stifling his mutinous thoughts, Shadowpaw dipped his head in respect to his mentor. Hmm... what will we do today? Gathering more herbs? He sighed almost inaudibly, the exhalation mixing with the whispering wind.

Crystalpool acknowledged Shadowpaw, meowing a greeting. Her Apprentice didn't look too excited, so Crystalpool guessed she would have to think up something fun.
We'll gather herbs later. Hey, why don't I send him out alone to see if he can find the best herb gathering places for some really important medicines?
Crystalpool smiled to herself. "Shadowpaw, today I've..." her voice trailed off. She sounded stupid. "Er, I'm going to let you go off alone. But you have to promise not to get in to much of a mess." Blinking in amusement, Crystalpool knew her serious Apprentice wouldn't do that. But still. "You will have to, um, find the best places where feverfew, catnip; or catmint, so called, and yarrow. Bring some dock and burdock root back if possible." Another good idea popped into her head. It would make Shadowpaw's search more challenging. "I will meet you back here at sunhigh. If you come back late, you'll be stuck gathering herbs for a half moon straight." Though she didn't mean it, Crystalpool wanted to make Shadowpaw work harder. The Medicine Cat's sky blue eyes softened as she thought about the one cat she gave up. Frostgaze. But now, so many handsome toms were in the clan: Eagleflight, a kittypet's mate, Jetclaw, Snowveil's mate, er, Adderfang, nobody's mate, Frostgaze.... nobody's mate... But she was a Medicine Cat. Shaking her head, she turned back to Shadowpaw. "Go now. I'll be watching."

Shadowpaw blinked as he heard Crystalpool's words. So it's a... scavenger hunt, I guess. Interesting. Well, maybe that was a little too harsh. it did sound like it might possibly be something resembling fun. Then his mentor ruined it.
"I will meet you back here at sunhigh. If you come back late, you'll be stuck gathering herbs for a half moon straight."
The apprentice lashed his tail mutinously, but didn't dare say anything out loud. No fair! If I'm a tiny bit late, I'm sentenced to death by extreme boredom?! But these thoughts didn't penetrate the facade of respect he had carefully smoothed over his face. "Yes, Crystalpool," he meowed, dipping his head briefly before trotting away. Hmm... What to find first...

Crystalpool nodded, and followed her Apprentice, hidden, from the stalks of reeds. Spotting some borage, Crystalpool blinked.
Snowveil might need that.
Thought Crystalpool, biting through the fleshy stalks. When she had gathered them all, Crystalpool raced after Shadowpaw. OOC: Gah, I keep on saying Crystalpaw instead of Crystalpool.

Chilly water squished up through the reeds as Shadowpaw trotted along. His white paws were soaked, and he couldn't help shivering. Brr... His green eyes lit up as he saw a leafy plant in front of him. Closing his eyes, the dark tabby inhaled deeply. He made a face as he caught the bitter scent of yarrow. Shadowpaw approached the plant delicately, as if it suddenly might spring out of the bog and attack him. He carefully nipped at the stems, careful not to swallow any of the leaves. Turning away from a plant that was now half its original size, the young cat carefully laid the yarrow leaves under a scraggly bush. I'll come back for those later.

The Medicine Cat flicked her ears, giving an inward nod of approval wwhen she saw Shadowpaw collect some yarrow. Borage still in her mouth, the silver feline tried hard not to walk out and start helping him.
Now what do I do?
Crystalpool was getting immensly bored and sleepy.
Why'd you wake up so early?

Shadowpaw sighed deeply, bored out of his mind. WHY does gathering herbs have to be so boring? He shook his head slowly and glared at the sunrise, wishing that Crystalpool had not woken him up so early. His head lifted slightly as a wisp of scent caught his nose. It's feverfew. Breaking into a trot, the dark tabby hurried forwards. Water splashed in his face as his paw slipped into a puddle, and he let out a hiss of distaste. Darn it! The apprentice shook himself gingerly, wincing as the water soaked through his thin pelt. Shadowpaw glanced back to where his mentor was sitting, and his eyes narrowed slightly. Dozing off, are we? Rolling his eyes, the apprentice hurried to collect the feverfew.

OOC: Er...I'm sorry for being late on my post.
IC: Blinking wearily, Crystalpool saw her apprentice look back and her fur flattened.
Ha. Your own apprentice had to tell you not to fall asleep.
Grudgingly, the Medicine Cat continued tracking her apprentice. The sun was halfway into the sky already.

ooc- That's okay.
Shadowpaw followed his mentor's gaze, and blinked in surprise as he saw how high the sun was. Wow. Time sure flies when you're having... But this isn't really fun, is it? He carefully nipped at the feverfew stalks, wondering why all herbs seemed to taste so bitter. Ick. He spat out a few drops of juice, wincing and coughing. Okay, a little overly dramatic. But it did taste bad. Hmm... the dark tabby thought as his belly growled softly. When's breakfast?

Crystalpool wandered off, keeping only half an eye on her apprentice. Yawning again, she watched the sun, eyes narrowed.

The dark tabby sighed softly as he watched his mentor wander off. You could at least pretend to help... What kind of example is this setting for me? Bet she didn't think of that. Rolling his eyes, Shadowpaw turned to gather up the feverfew stalks. Trotting back through the marsh, he carefully placed them next to the yarrow leaves he had collected earlier. His stomach growled like an angry badger, and he glanced back in Crystalpool's direction. No breakfast, huh? Poor abused Shadowpaw. His emerald gaze flickered over to his mentor again, judging the distance she had to cover before she could start yelling at him. I suppose I might have time to catch breakfast...

Finally, Crystalpool decided she'd better find her apprentice and give him something to eat, quickly. Swiftly she took the life of a vole and sniffed the air for Shadowpaw. Spotting him, she bounded up and dropped the vole. "Eat fast." she muttered before padding quickly away into the cover of the bushes. Wow, stupid but caring. That was a perfect description of Crystalpool.[/sub]

Shadowpaw blinked in surprise as the plump vole landed just in front of his paws. He looked down at it, then at the cat that had tossed it to him, then down again. Wait a minute... Did Crystalpool just... catch me some prey??? Crystalpool? Wondering if the world had gone insane, the apprentice crunched into his food. It tasted... good. Not poisoned or anything. Bemused, he kept watching the white cat. "Um... Thanks."

OOC- I am the new Random Queen! lol
Crystalpool sighed. I'd best catch something for me soon, too. Her gaze was cold as she snifed the air for prey... "CRYSTALPOOL!!!" Good heavens, who was making such a racket? Just at that moment, Adderfang tumbled in front of her, a mouse dangling in his jaws. "I didn't think you ate yet," he meowed, embarrased. Crystalpool rolled her eyes. "Well, Adderfang, I'm sorta testing my apprentice here..." mewed the medicine cat, but she ate the mouse in one big gulp.[/sub]
