(*dies* oh you know Cinny had to come back for that. hehe after all, whats better than one hypocrite? why two of course! LOL And I apologize in advance for writing a novel. ^^ )
"Maybe if you had intelligence higher than that of a mouse you would have convinced them to come back some other way than physical aggression, Mr. Cinnamonstreak, I had at least thought you were above that, but apparently I was wrong."
Cinnamonstreak heard Songheart's comment to him as he was walking away, but he didn't feel like engaging in a verbal combat due to him being soaking wet. He'd also seen the glare Frostflash had given him for his remark to Songheart. While Cinnamonstreak was in a foul mood, it would have been unlikely he'd have turned on his own Deputy though Cinny definitely wouldn't have taken anything the female said pleasantly in regards to how to or how not to speak to StormClan's Deputy.
Cinnamonstreak hadn't gone maybe 3 feet before Oakpaw began protesting what Frostflash had said about the clans being separate. When Oakpaw made the comment about the warriors not getting along and it being unfair, Cinnamonstreak walked around behind a boulder and quietly sat down to listen. He'd always felt some separation from the other Clans was a good thing and having friends outside one's clan was nearing traitor status.
But then again, Cinnamonstreak also had to admit he'd never known a cat in EmberClan that would actually stand there and claim to have another friend outside of EmberClan, so what was the actual problem here? Oakpaw was trying to make friends and thus showing that the Apprentices were acting more mature than the Warriors? If that was the case, Cinnamonstreak could think of several Warriors who would take offense at the "cheekiness" of Oakpaw. What broke his train of that was Songheart's reply.
"Frostflash, I know the apprentices have acted foolishly today. But they have more wisdom than we usually grant them. Is it not true that StarClan would not want their children to fight all the time, and that they would rather see us get along, despite grudgingly for some? I believe that we can at least live in the same space without killing each other. We must maintain Clan boundaries, I do agree with you on that basis, but I still think that perhaps we should ease up on the tenseness a bit."
Cinnamonstreak couldn't believe his ears and had to put a paw over his mouth to keep from laughing out loud. Wow, talk about being a hypocrite! Cinnamonstreak listened as Frostflash replied and shook his head. Now he simply HAD to go back. This was too much to let go without commenting to Songheart. Cinnamonstreak came back as Skysong finishing speaking. Snorting with disdainful amusement, Cinnamonstreak stopped near Stormpaw and Frostflash and stood across the way from Songheart, his tail flicking with suppressed laughter.
"Oh please pardon me, I just HAD to come back and applaud Songheart here for her lovely speech." Cinnamonstreak meowed with amusement at Songheart. "Congratulations Songheart, would you like to convict yourself further? Or perhaps you'd like to enlighten us about the finer methods of keeping oneself busy while your Apprentice is off playing in the rain elsewhere?" He mewed sweetly at the Deputy, knowing he was playing with fire, but finding the whole situation too hilarious to pass up. That was, until Oakpaw yelled at him.
Oakpaw had been sitting there feeling rather depressed and decidedly unhappy in puddle of rainwater as he listened to the adults. It appalled him that Songheart and Cinnamonstreak were about ready to kill each other because Cinnamonstreak had had to go get them since they had ignored Skysong's call for them to come in.So, Songheart was mad that Cinnamonstreak had gone to get them instead of Skysong? Then did that mean Frostflash would have been angry at Skysong for having fetched Stormpaw in? And then in the next moment Songheart and Frostflash were agreeing everyone should just get along. Wait a second, weren't Frostflash and Cinnamonstreak in the same clan? It sounded to me like Songheart was about to rip Cinnamonstreak apart a minute ago… And then there was the fact that at the same time they were all agreeing everyone should get along, they were saying Stormpaw and him still couldn't hang out together. Say what?? Nothing was making sense to him at the moment.
Sighing, Oakpaw gave up trying to sort through all the mixed messages he was hearing and looked over at Stormpaw to see what she thought. She looked as upset as he did and was pushing a pebble around with her paw. Oakpaw looked again over at Songheart in time to see Cinnamonstreak was coming back.
"Oh please pardon me, I just HAD to come back and applaud Songheart here for her lovely speech. Congratulations Songheart, would you like to convict yourself further? Or perhaps you'd like to enlighten us about the finer methods of keeping oneself busy while your Apprentice is off playing in the rain elsewhere?"
Staring at Cinnamonstreak, he could practically hear Songheart's temper shredding and knew there was about to be one very ugly fight if Songheart and Cinnamonstreak kept this up. Suddenly fed up, Oakpaw stood up and gave an exasperated sigh. "Don't you convict yourself Cinnamonstreak?! You're no better than she is! At least Stormpaw and I can look past what CLAN we're in and just have fun!" He said frustratedly at the red Warrior. Cinnamonstreak hadn't been expecting Oakpaw's reaction and was startled. Looking over at the Apprentice, his look was akin to a glare that an Apprentice would lecture a Warrior.
Oakpaw shrunk back a little from the fierceness of the glare Cinnamonstreak suddenly shot him and slunk behind Songheart. Peering around at Cinnamonstreak, he felt like a coward and came out from behind her and stood directly in front of Cinnamonstreak. Laying his ears back, every hair on Oakpaw's body was bristling with nervousness as he spoke up again. "It's not fair! What's wrong with you two? Why can't you and Songheart get along like me and Stormpaw?? How come we have to be punished when we're getting along just FINE. Why don't you and Songheart go play in the rain?! Maybe you'll see its more fun that just standing around arguing all the time!" Oakpaw meowed angrily at Cinnamonstreak.
"What?! Don't be ridiculous! Songheart and I are NOT going to go play in the rain!" Cinnamonstreak sputtered out in a retort once he'd gotten over his shock at being lectured by Oakpaw. That was actually the first thing he could think of to say and kept staring at Oakpaw like he didn't know if he wanted to whap Oakpaw or thought Oakpaw had gone mad and wanted to get away from him. "And mind your place Oakpaw and your manners! An Apprentice does not lecture a Warrior! He growled at Oakpaw, finally managing to get over his shock long enough to look stern again.
Oakpaw looked frustrated as Cinnamonstreak gave him a disapproving glare and told him to mind his place. Squirming a little as confronting someone was very much something Oakpaw didn't like doing, especially since he was addressing a Warrior. Knowing he was already in some very deep trouble, he fidgetted and struggled for a reply for a moment before finally replying. "Well, um, I will! But only when you and Songheart start ACTING like Warriors!" He finally said with a little hop forwards. Realizing he'd just called his mentor and Deputy a kit, Oakpaw's ears folded back and he scuffled his paws, but Cinnamonstreak was already replying and Oakpaw looked back up at him.
Cinnamonstreak hissed faintly and backed up as Oakpaw gave a small hop forward at him. Not believing what he was hearing, he shot a look at the other Warriors, asking if anyone else thought Oakpaw was out of line before glaring down at Oakpaw again and trying to ignore the voice that was telling him Oakpaw had a point. Laying his ears back, Cinnamonstreak drew himself up properly. "I'll have you know OakPAW that Songheart and I and the other Warriors are ADULTS. Sometimes the things we do don't make sense, but that doesn't mean we're acting like kits." Cinnamonstreak meowed firmly.
Oakpaw stared at Cinnamonstreak momentarily confused and exasperated. Did anyone else NOT get the point Oakpaw was trying to say? Flustered, Oakpaw sighed and tried again, hurrying in case Songheart was about to grab him and drag him away. "Since, since when did being an adult have anything to do with this? I'm just saying that it looks like Stormpaw and I are getting along better than you guys and well, yeah we're younger, but what's that got to do with the Warrior code? I thought the whole point of the code was to look for ways to get along, not find grounds to accuse and hate someone because they're not in the same clan as you are!" Oakpaw shot back, confused and upset. Cinnamonstreak merely stared at him like he'd sprouted two heads.
"You know what? Fine! Punish us for what we did, go ahead! But, but, at least, at least we'll be MATURE about it!" He said, feeling defeated, cold and tired. The water on his pelt seemed to weigh a hundred pounds and he was too unhappy to really care anymore. He felt like crying as well since he knew he'd disrespected a Warrior and he was most likely going to be punished severely by Songheart, his parents and probably even Scarletstar.
In the silence that followed after Oakpaw said that, Cinnamonstreak could only stare at Oakpaw and wonder when on earth that Apprentice had gotten so smart. Granted he had still backtalked and disrespected a Warrior, but Cinnamonstreak was forced to admit he and Songheart had probably needed that. Not daring to look in Songheart's direction, Cinnamonstreak was still trying to find something to say while standing here with his legs slightly spread apart. He would have passed for a stone carving of a soaking wet red cat had it not been for the tip of his tail twitching periodically to show he was alive.
During the few seconds of silence that rang in the cave, Oakpaw never felt more ashamed in his life. His tail and ears drooping, Oakpaw sneezed before looking over at Stormpaw. "Come on Stormpaw. We probably have Elder duties for a month. Let's go get dry and get started. I, I don't wanna be here anymore." He said, very upset and almost hating himself for wanting to cry as he started down the tunnel.
As Oakpaw said that and then started to walk off, Cinnamonstreak faltered and opened his mouth to say something, but nothing came out. He waited a few seconds and debated whether to comment now or not. Cinnamonstreak wasn't sure Songheart would appreciate what he had to say, and he felt incredibly awkward saying it, but Cinny felt it needed to be said. Trotting a few steps after Oakpaw, Cinnamonstreak called his name. "Oakpaw. Wait." Cinnamonstreak waited until Oakpaw stopped and looked back at him. "… Good job. You'll make a fine warrior one day Oakpaw." Cinnamonstreak finally said, and for those that cared to read the between the lines, that was as close as Cinny was going to get to saying he'd been wrong and Oakpaw had been right.
"Maybe if you had intelligence higher than that of a mouse you would have convinced them to come back some other way than physical aggression, Mr. Cinnamonstreak, I had at least thought you were above that, but apparently I was wrong."
