For the third time that day, Wolfriver found herself drifting toward the Twoleg paths in the meadows. Technically she was supposed to be hunting, but most of the prey seemed inclined to stay inside whatever burrow or clump of grass currently offered it the best shelter, and the air was so heavy with rain that it was hard to catch their scent.
Wolfriver stopped and swiped a paw over her head to brush off the fresh moisture that had collected on her fur. "Ick," she muttered. "Ick, ick, ick. You'd think the clouds'd have something better to do than sit around on the ground and make us wet." The small cat sighed and shook out her fur again. "Well, whatever. I'm done with this." Wolfriver lifted her paws carefully from the ground, ignoring the little suction-y noises they made in the mud, and padded off again, this time letting her paws carry her in the direction they'd been trying to all day. Maybe the Twoleg paths would be drier.

Hazeltear shook her sodden fur crossly as she padded along the muddy ground, trying her best not to get her long, tortoiseshell fur in the mud yet again. Pinestorm was made for jumping in puddles, but not her. Ohh no - StarClan could send all the rain they wanted, but she was so not getting filthy on purpose. Just earlier that morning, she had groomed her fur specially for Silversun, but with hindsight, she realized that he wouldn't be able to see it anyways. Too bad. As she padded along the marginally drier Twoleg paths, she felt her lowered head bump into something solid. It certainly didn't feel like bark, and when she looked up, she realized that it was her Clanmate, Wolfriver. "What're you doing here?" she mewed, surprised.

Wolfriver jumped half a tail length into the air when someone bumped into her. "Wha-? Oh, Hazeltear!" She blinked, spinning around to face her friend as she tried to flatten the fur all along her back and tail that had fluffed up in her surprise. "I'm-wait, what are you doing here? And what's wrong? You look kinda upset." Wolfriver tilted her head to the side. "It's the rain, isn't it?" She shook her head. "It usually isn't this icky, and I like jumping in puddles and stuff, but there's so much wetness. It's like- it's like the air is wet, and it makes my fur all sticky." Wolfriver shook herself again.

Hazeltear normally would've tried to flatten her fur, but it was currently plastered to her sides. "I hate it when it rains like this," she agreed. "It's like StarClan wants to dump a whole year's worth of rain on us to make up for that dry spell we had a while back." She shook her fur yet again in irritation. "Plus, it makes Pinestorm UNBEARABLE - he thrives on this kind of weather. It's Hazeltear this, Hazeltear that, and 'Oh Hazeltear, why don't you want to go and jump in puddles with me?'" She snorted, and tried to twitch her whiskers. Unfortunately, they were weighed down by several puddles' worth of precipitation. [/color]

Wolfriver laughed at Hazeltear's suggestion. "Yeah, I'll bet," she agreed. Suddenly she blinked, then padded past Hazeltear and stood staring as something in the mud. "Hey, look at this!" she said, her voice suddenly more animated. "I'll be it's a Twoleg pawprint!" Wolfriver pressed her nose close to the dirt, sniffing though she knew almost all scent would be hidden by the moisture in the air. "I wonder if their paws are always shaped this funny," she mused, raising her head and tilting it to the side in thought.

Hazeltear tipped her head to the side curiously. "I'll bet they are," she agreed, and added, "They have those weird blocky things on the end of their paws, and the pads are squiggly!" She snorted in disbelief. "Twolegs are just plain weird," she mewed. She glanced ahead. Although the scent was almost gone, there were more Twoleg pawprints sunk deep into the mud. Her paws itched to go back to her warm, dry nest in the Warrior's Den, but this was too good to pass up. "Do you wanna go exploring?" she mewed mischievously.

Wolfriver nodded. "Yeah they're strange." She brightened immediately at the suggestion of exploring, and looked up with an excited mrrow. "You bet I do!" she meowed, thrilled that for once someone else had suggested it. Wolfriver was glad Hazeltear was back. Things had been far too boring around camp without her. Her pelt prickling at the thought of adventure, Wolfriver followed the direction of Hazeltear's gaze to the trail of Twoleg pawprints. "You wanna follow them?" she guessed, reaching out with fascination to place a paw inside one huge Twoleg pawprint as she spoke.

Hazeltear twitched a whisker in mock irritation. "What else are we supposed to do, eat them?" she mewed dryly. as she bounded off, she mewed, "Come on!" For once, she didn't even notice the dirty puddle water as she splashed straight through it, coating her pelt in a fresh layer of mud. "There's more up ahead," she panted, as she stopped to take a breather. Running was so much harder when it was on muddy ground, and her long, tortoiseshell pelt soaked up water like crazy. She felt like a walking sponge.
OOC: That last sentence about eating the pawprints = not very witty, but I think I broke my imagination. >.>

Wolfriver grinned and jumped forward after Hazeltear, pushing off the center of the pawprint. Unlike Hazeltear, though, she landed less than a tail length away, scrambling in mid-air to land with all four paws on the pawprint. "I did it!" she exclaimed, jumping out of the pawprint in her excitement. It was hard to stand like that, with all four paws squished together, anyway. She glanced up to see that Hazeltear was far ahead and sprinted forward to catch up, narrowly avoiding the muddy water from puddle the other cat plowed through. "Eww...that one was muddy," she meowed to herself as she began closing with Hazeltear, suddenly finding it easier as her friend slowed. "You all right?" she meowed, eyeing Hazeltear with concern.

"I'm fine," Hazeltear breathed. "It's just this weather - I feel like a sponge, and all this water is seriously weighing me down." She shook her sodden pelt yet again, although it didn't help one bit. She still felt like a rock with legs. "Stupid rain!" she spat irritably, and stomped around for a few moments in a rather pathetic attempt at a temper tantrum. When she was done, she mewed, "I'm okay. Let's keep going."

Wolfriver sighed sympathetically as they continued walking. "Yeah, that's gotta stink," she meowed, for once feeling grateful for her shorter pelt. At least it was good for something, even if it meant she froze every time it snowed. Wolfriver watched quietly as Hazeltear ranted, the worried look still in her eyes. Her friend was still clearly upset, and that just meant one thing: Wolfriver would have to find a way to cheer her up, and it would have to be good. "All right," she meowed cheerfully, when Hazeltear suggested they continue, skipping ahead on the Twoleg path. "Hey! She called over her shoulder, "There are trees that actually cover part of the path over here!" she meowed. "And the Twoleg scent is getting stronger." Wolfriver skidded to a stop beneath a particularly large tree, enjoying the relative dryness of the ground despite the fact that the air was still heavy and damp.

Hazeltear glanced at Wolfriver in relief. "You are the best friend ever, for finding those trees," she purred, and scampered underneath them. Although they didn't completely shield her from the rain, it was better than no cover at all. She scanned the path ahead, searching for more Twoleg pawprints. "I see more over there!" she mewed in delight, and scampered over. The pawprints were still the same, and had the same scent, but they were fresh. "I think we're getting closer!" she squealed, excitement making her sound like a kit.

Wolfriver let out a mrrow of amusement as Hazeltear joined her beneath the trees' cover. As they paused there a moment, she glanced at the woods on either side, then almost straight up at the tree above her, wondering whether it would be worth coming back here to climb it and hang from the branch that reached almost straight across the path. I'd just need to find out when a patrol was coming... she mused, running through the many possibilities in her mind. It took her a full ten seconds to realize that Hazeltear was continuing up the path. For once looking guilty, she wrenched her attention away from the tree and padded quickly after her friend, catching on to Hazeltear's excitement. "I wonder if the Twoleg's still here!" she exclaimed, "It's always so cool to see them up close."

"Cool?" Hazeltear mewed doubtfully, "I think not. Twolegs are mad, every single one of them." She sniffed disdainfully. "Although, it would be fun to sneak up on them and - " Hazeltear stopped suddenly, as she ran into a towering silver stand. It reeked of Twolegs, and supported a curious device with two huge round things, attached to another silver frame. "What in StarClan's name is that?" she mewed out loud.
Out of the corner of her eyes, she spotted another Twoleg, who was...riding the odd silver device. It was turning two sticks which protruded out to the sides, and was somehow making the big, round objects move. "I rest my case," she mewed at last, her eyes as large as moons.

Wolfriver grinned in response to Hazeltear's comment, a grin that widened at her disdainful sniff. "But that's what makes it cool. You never know what kind of mouse brained thing they're going to do next!" Her attention sharpened at the beginning of what sounded like it was going to be a good idea for a bored moment, and she frowned a little in disappointment when Hazeltear cut it off. "Sneak up on them and what?" she meowed anxiously, then realized why Hazeltear had stopped. "Oh."
Wolfriver turned to see what had sparked that last comment and froze, eyes fixed solidly on the moving Twoleg and object in amazement. "Whoa...she meowed, "How does it do that?" She turned back to the object in front of her and began poking at one large round circle with a paw. "How do you make it go?"
