Hawkstar padded into the training clearing within the great patch of oaks, glad to see that it was empty. With the great number of apprentices that had suddenly been give mentors, there was almost always at least one pair out training. Usually it was fine to share the clearing, even great, but this was the first lesson. Hawkstar wanted it to be easy for both of them to concentrate, and that meant it was good to be alone.
She padded softly across the dirt to the base of a large tree at the opposite side, and settled herself in the crumbling dirt at its trunk. Freepaw should be there soon, and then they could begin. Hawkstar was looking forward to seeing what her new apprentice could do.

Freepaw pranced into the clearing looking for Hawkstar when she spotted her with her against a tree. She decided to sneek up on her. She hide in the bushes and steped very carefully untill she got up right behind Hawkstar and then she jumped out and and gave a low growl/hiss. 'I hope I gave her even the tinyest scare' Freepaw thought to herself with a small smirk on her face!

Hawkstar heard the whisper of fur on leaves in the forest behind her tree. Shaking her head slightly - she'd had enough apprentices by then to know what to expect - she sat motionless as the noise drew closer. Freepaw was good at stalking, she had to admit, just not quite good enough to avoid giving herself away to the wary ears of a cat who was expecting her. Moving silently on the quieter dust of the clearing, Hawkstar rose and circled around the side of the tree a few short steps, just far enough around to put her out of the way of apprentice's probable line of attack. She turned to face the direction from which she expected Freepaw to come, then grinned as the apprentice launched herself out of the bushes in Hawkstar's direction. "Hi Freepaw," she meowed, still grinning at the apprentice's enthusiasm, "I can see you're ready to begin."

"Did you hear me?" Freepaw said as she walked over to Hawkstar. "I was sure that I was being really quite. Apperently not. Have you been waiting long Hawkstar?" Freepaw sat down and looked at her mentor, waiting for a answer. She tilted her ears this way and that listening for any sound that would indicate someone coming. "I'm surprised that we are the only ones in the clearing today. How very curiose?" Freepaw was confussed at why no one els was in the clearing besides her and Hawkstar. 'Well it's better this way for the first lesson I guess' Freepaw thought as she sat and waited.

Hawkstar smiled, glad that the apprentice did not seem upset. "You were very quiet, but I was expecting you," she answered. "Even quiet steps are easily heard if you know what to listen for." She stepped out into the main part of the clearing. "Are you ready to start? I'd like to see again what you know of hunting later this afternoon, but I thought it would be best to begin with something new." Hawkstar shifted half her weight onto her haunches. "Today I'm going to start teaching you to fight."

Freepaw got down into a defensive postion that one of her friends had been teaching her. "I'm ready if you are Hawkstar." Freepaw said with a smiel on her face. "But I must warn you. I have been practiceing with the other apprentices." Freepaw was geting big headed or anything it was just that she had beat all the other apprentices and was sure that this was going to be a bit of a chalenge.

Hawkstar hid a smile. "Good then, let's go." She deepened her half crouch into a full defensive stance. "It will be interesting to see what you've learned from that practice," she meowed. "Now, you go first. Attack me." Her eyes settled warily on the apprentice, unfocused to pick up any hint at an attack before it could come.

Freepaw got down and ready to punce but that wasn't what she was going to. She was going to dash at Hawkstar and then attack her when she dodged her attack. It has worked so far maybe it will work one more time. So she put her plan into action! She did everything the same instead of pouncing she dashed forward and waited for her apponenet to dodge her attack. When she thought the time was right she would jump up and behind to attack from behind.

Hawkstar watched Freepaw carefully, watching for the tell-tale twitch of muscle movement that would mean an attack was forthcoming. Then the apprentice was in motion, and Hawkstar slid to the side in her crouch to dodge the attack. Her eyes tracked over the apprentice's moving form, and she stopped as soon as the minimum amount of movement had been made. No matter how much Freepaw had been practicing, Hawkstar was determined not to let her win the first round.

This time Freepaw attacked with a little less force that way she didn't tiar herself out. She looked at Hawkstar's muscles to watch for even the slightest sign that she would attack. Then Freepaw acted on instinct and tried to tackle Hawkstar. 'I hope I don't get hurt trying to show what little I know.' Freepaw thought as she landed a little off from Hawkstar. "Ugh! Im still not getting it. Maybe it was easyer with the other apprentices but not now." Freepaw was painting a little. She wore herself out way to fast.

Hawkstar ducked forward and skidded under the tackle, her paws spinning out slightly on the dirt. Freepaw was fast, she'd have to watch that. She suddenly realized the apprentice was panting and straightened out of her crouch, looking concerned. "You okay?" she meowed, wondering if the apprentice had been hurt.

Freepaw nodded. "I'm fine don't worry, just a little thirsy is all. And I skipped breakfast I was so excited about this today." Freepaw sat down and caught her breath. "Can we go get something to eat Hawkstar?" Freepaw looked suddenly alot older and tiard. Freepaw layed down for a minute and rolled onto her back, and licked her paws. "I'm so tiard. I barely slept at all for the last few nights..."

Hawkstar shook her head. "That's not good, even though you were excited. You should always try to eat before you come out training, you'll think much faster." She grinned. "But I can understand, I hardly got any sleep myself, the night before my first training session." Hawkstar glanced around the clearing, just in case a stray squirrel happened to have been interested by the noise they were making. "We can go hunting, sure." The brown warrior gestured with her tail. "Lead the way, you know what to do. I'll follow you for a moment, just to watch. I know you can hunt, but you never know, I might be able to point out something helpful. Sometimes details matter."

Freepaw jumped up and scented the air...nothing. She went around to the other side of the clearing and scented the air again. This time she smelled squirell. She crouched down real low and stocked her pray then she punced and caught it when it was just starting to relize what happened. She went back to Hawkstar to show her what she caught.

Hawkstar watched as Freepaw stalked her prey and caught it, noting the way her muscles moved. The apprentice was already developing a smoothness to her movements that could only have come with extensive practice. Hawkstar smiled as Freepaw returned to her with the squirrel. "Nice catch," she meowed. "You're good at stalking. Have you ever caught a bird?"
